Aguas Calientes is a tiny village in the Highlands of Guatemala. The Aguas Calientes MayaWorks group is a wonderful success story. In addition to their foot-loom weaving skills, these women, who once spoke only the Maya language of Kaqchikel, made it a priority to learn Spanish. They dedicated two afternoons a week to studying with a teacher who was paid by MayaWorks. Learning Spanish and "graduating" from the 6th grade has given them self-confidence in their work, in the marketplace and in their community. Work from MayaWorks has brought electricity to homes, better food to tables, and access to health care.
