Quick Overview

This Guatemalan fair trade clerical stole makes a unique gift for your pastor and is an excellent way to celebrate a special occasion. MayaWorks clerical stoles are hand woven in 100% cotton threads by artisans of Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. The artisans are paid a fair and living wage for their work. The red liturgical stole features symbols like bread, shafts of wheat, fish, the cross and chalices. Corresponding to the liturgical year, red is often used for celebrating the Passion at Easter, Pentecost and the sacrament of Confirmation. The hard work that goes into these clerical stoles is shown through their amazing quality. They are truly a gift that will last a lifetime! Each stole measures 4” wide by 52.5” long from the drop (105 inches total) and has a 4” additional fringe at each end. There is also a straight neck that is held from the collar with a woven fabric chord. Fair trade clerical stoles should be spot cleaned.

Details

The solid red clerical stole, as well as all of MayaWorks stoles, are hand woven by the artisans of the tiny hamlet of Panabaj which is located in the town of Santiago Atitlán. Santiago Atitlán is situated at beautiful Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. The artisans of this area do much of MayaWorks bead work and crocheting. The artisans have been mastering their craft since the 1970’s. A priest who was living in their community had an idea to create a product that would bring in a steady source of income for Maya artisans. Being familiar with clerical stoles, he encouraged the Maya to weave stoles for the religious community. MayaWorks began working with stole weavers in 1997. Their work has provided them with a fair wage and has allowed them to be a part of the economic development of their small community.
