10 Year Anniversary Image Explanation

The drawing is by Winifred Godfrey, the renowned artist of the Mayan Procession. It is her gift to MayaWorks for its 10th Anniversary. She provides this description of the Maya symbols in the drawing:
  • Starting at the top center of the border is the SUN symbol; each of the corners has the FLOWER or DAY symbol.
  • The symbol at the bottom is IXCHEL for Weaving.
  • The repetitive design at the top and bottom is a variation on the LEAF design.
  • The designs on the left and right sides are the ZIGZAG PATH indicating the differences in people etc. working together.
  • The symbol in the middle of the right and left sides is the STAR symbol.
  • The weaver in the middle has a belt around her waist to symbolize the backstrap loom and the pattern she is weaving is the BUTTERFLY (to symbolize Hope).
  • The double line in front of her indicates the lower bar of the loom and the diagonal line a petate - the mat on which she sits.
  • The triangle at the top is the line that holds the loom to the tree or door and also points toward the Sun.
  • The vertical lines below are just the unfinished threads of the weaving.
