These beautiful, handbeaded necklaces are created by indigenous artisans from the town of Santiago Atitlán on the shores of Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. Santiago Atitlán is located across the lake from the popular tourist destination of Panajachel, nestled between two volcanoes, Tolimán and San Pedro. The majority of residents are indigenous Maya and speak the native Tz’utujil language. Artisans from this town are known for their expert weaving, embroidery, and beading skills. The women who bead items for MayaWorks have perfected their skills over 15 years. Each keychain is made with care by the women of Santiago Atitlán who receive a fair wage for their work, literacy trainings, as well as professional skills trainings.
