These beautiful, handbeaded keychains are created by indigenous artisans from the town of Santiago Atitlán on the shores of Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. Santiago Atitlán is located across the lake from Panajachel, nestled between two volcanoes, Tolimán and San Pedro. The majority of residents are indigenous Maya who speak the native Tz'utujil language. Artisans from this town are known for their beautiful embroidered birds and flowers that appear on traditional clothing. The MayaWorks artisans perfect the difficult shaping of the keychains using tiny glass beads. Women who bead items for MayaWorks receive literacy trainings and professional skills trainings, as well as a fair wage for their work.
