These fair trade rings are a unique piece of Guatemalan art. Each ring is hand beaded by approximately 30 Mayan artisans in Santiago Atitlán, an indigenous Mayan community on the shore of Lake Atitlán. The crafting of these pieces requires expert beading skills and a meticulous eye to perfect the designs. The purchase of this fair trade product provides Guatemalan artisans with the economic capacity to provide for their families and better their lives. The women of Santiago have a particularly interesting story in that much of the violence that occurred during Guatemala's 36-year civil war affected this community. After the Peace Accords were signed in 1996, Santiago became a popular tourist destination. Resting on the beautiful Lake Atitlán, Santiago boasts exquisite weaving, embroidery and beading traditions.
