These beautiful hand beaded rings are made by our group in Santiago, on the shores of Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. The women of Santiago have a particularly poignant story. Much of the violence that occurred during Guatemala's 36-year civil war occurred in Santiago. After the Peace Accords were signed in 1996, Santiago revived itself as a bustling indigenous town and tourist destination. Santiago is famous for indigenous weaving, embroidery, beading, and painting. The Maya beaders of Santiago earn a fair wage for their beaded work, enabling them to provide for their families and better their lives. The crafting of each piece requires expert skill and a meticulous eye for detail.
