The Guatemalan Little Critters Coin Purses are constructed by the artisans of Xetonox, a group within the tiny village of Tecpan. The artisans weave the colorful designs and Maya traditional symbols on treadle foot looms, a skill that has been passed down generation to generation in their culture. They also do the construction of the product such as sewing in the zippers. The group consists of 8 women who speak the native language of Kaqchikel. The group is able to weave very difficult fabrics and is very proud of the work they do. The artisans work under the principles of fair trade. MayaWorks also provides these artisans with scholarships to send their daughters to school, various literacy and skills trainings and microcredit loans to start their own small businesses.
