Our handmade holiday star ornament is beaded by indigenous Maya artisans from Santiago Atitlán. Santiago is situated on the shores of one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, Lake Atitlán. It is a place filled with indigenous folklore and yet it suffers a painful history of violence due to Guatemala's 36 year civil war. In spite of their painful past, Santiago's indigenous Guatemalan artisans find joy in weaving the symbols of nature into their Christmas ornaments, handmade jewelry and personal accessories. With the income they earn from crafting handmade holiday ornaments, the women of Santiago are able to provide more nutritious meals for their children, send them to school and dream of a brighter future for them!
