In the coastal town of Santiago Atitlán, on the beautiful Lake Atitlán in Guatemala, 30 Maya beaders create these beautiful beaded pieces. The women of Santiago have a particularly interesting story in that much of the violence that occurred during Guatemala's 36-year civil war affected this community. After the Peace Accords were signed in 1996, Santiago became a popular tourist destination. Resting on the beautiful Lake Atitlán, Santiago boasts exquisite weaving, embroidery and beading traditions. The Maya women of Santiago earn a fair wage for their beaded work, which provides them with the income to purchase food for their families and educate their children.
